The Colombian daily paper 'El Tiempo', in it's August 29, 2008 edition, published a news item -from the never ending computer files of Raul Reyes- which alleges that it encountered an email written to Hector Mondragon- in which he is addressed in a very familiar way so he appears as a 'comrade of absolute confidence of the FARC'.
This is a clear conspiracy against a leader of the social movements, an academic and a promoter of popular struggle, who has always defended his democratic convictions and his clear differences with armed groups.
The publication of this slander represents an intent to criminalize the popular movement and a danger for the physical integrity of this important leader, who has been involved with defending indigenous and poor farmers, not just in Colombia but all over the Hemisphere.
The social organizations which belong to the Hemispheric Social Alliance manifest our solidarity and support for Hector Mondragon while at the same time we demand that the Colombian government cease their attacks against our compañero and rectify the false information which they have published. We are alerting international public opinion about the official persecution which this leader is a victim.

Alerta: Calumnias oficiales contra Héctor Mondragón
El diario colombiano El Tiempo, en su edición del 29 de agosto de 2008, publicó una noticia según la cual, en el inagotable computador de Raúl Reyes se encontró un correo dirigido a Héctor Mondragón, presentándole con mucha familiaridad a “una camarada de absoluta confianza” de las FARC.
Esto es un evidente montaje contra un dirigente social, académico y promotor de la lucha popular, que siempre ha defendido sus convicciones democráticas y sus diferencias con el accionar de los grupos armados.
La publicación de esta calumnia representa un intento de criminalizar el movimiento popular y un peligro para la integridad de este importante dirigente, que ha estado vinculado a las reivindicaciones campesinas e indígenas, no solo en Colombia, sino a nivel hemisférico.
Las organizaciones sociales que pertenecen a la Alianza Social Continental, manifestamos nuestra solidaridad y respaldo a Héctor Mondragón, a la vez que exigimos al gobierno colombiano cesar sus ataques contra nuestro compañero y rectificar la información falsa que se ha publicado. Alertamos a la opinión pública internacional sobre la persecución oficial de la que está siendo víctima este dirigente.
